چکیده

The current study explores infants’ use of prosodic cues coincident with phrases in processing fluent speech. After familiarization with two versions of the same word sequence, both 6and 9-month-olds showed a preference for a passage containing the sequence as a noun phrase over a passage with the same sequence as a syntactic non-unit. However, this result was found only in one of two groups, the group exposed to a stronger prosodic difference between the syntactic and non-syntactic sequences. Sixmonth-olds were tested in the same way on passages containing verb phrases. In this case, both groups preferred the passage with the verb phrase to the passage with the same word sequence as a syntactic non-unit. These results provide the first evidence that infants as young as 6 months old are sensitive to prosodic markers of syntactic units smaller than the clause, and, in addition, that they use this sensitivity to recognize phrasal units, both noun and verb phrases, in fluent speech. This ability to use phrase-level prosodic cues is variable, however, and appears to depend on the strength or number of cues associated with these syntactic units.

Bootstrapping the syntactic bootstrapper: Probabilistic labelling of prosodic phrases

The syntactic bootstrapping hypothesis proposes that syntactic structure provides children with cues for learning the meaning of novel words. In this paper, we address the question of how children might start acquiring some aspects of syntax before they possess a sizeable lexicon. The study presents two models of early syntax acquisition that rest on three major assumptions grounded in the infa...

Prosodic Bootstrapping of Clauses: Is it Language-Specific?

Introduction It has long been observed that prosody and syntax interact in our spoken language. For example, prosodic modulations such as pausing, final-syllable lengthening, and pitch resets occur reliably at clause and major phrase boundaries, particularly in infant-directed speech (Broen, 1972; Bernstein Ratner, 1986; Fernald et al., 1989; Soderstrom et al., 2008). Proponents of the prosodic...

Bootstrapping lexical and syntactic acquisition.

This paper focuses on how phrasal prosody and function words may interact during early language acquisition. Experimental results show that infants have access to intermediate prosodic phrases (phonological phrases) during the first year of life, and use these to constrain lexical segmentation. These same intermediate prosodic phrases are used by adults to constrain on-line syntactic analysis. ...

Unsupervised Syntactic Chunking with Acoustic Cues: Computational Models for Prosodic Bootstrapping

Learning to group words into phrases without supervision is a hard task for NLP systems, but infants routinely accomplish it. We hypothesize that infants use acoustic cues to prosody, which NLP systems typically ignore. To evaluate the utility of prosodic information for phrase discovery, we present an HMMbased unsupervised chunker that learns from only transcribed words and raw acoustic correl...
